Every comparison of the Tesla Model 3 and the BMW i4 we have read treats them as rivals sitting on adjacent forecourts. Look at the 2026 window stickers and that framing collapses. There is roughly a $16,500 gap between the versions people actually cross-shop, and once you see it, the whole question changes from « which is better » to « what is the BMW premium buying you ».

Where the money actually lands in 2026
The two line-ups no longer overlap the way they did three years ago. Tesla renamed its trims for 2026: what everyone still calls the Long Range RWD is now the Premium RWD, and a cheaper Standard RWD sits below it. BMW kept its structure but renamed the M50 as the M60 and gave it a substantial power increase.
Put the trims side by side and the picture is unambiguous. The cheapest i4 costs more than the second-from-top Model 3.

Range: 363 against 333, and what that gap is worth
The Model 3 Premium RWD is rated at 363 miles and the i4 eDrive40 at 333 miles on 18 inch wheels. That 30 mile difference sounds decisive on paper and rarely is in a week of driving, because both cars will comfortably cover any normal commute for several days between charges.
Two details matter more than the headline. First, the i4’s rating drops to 307 miles the moment you specify 19 inch wheels, and most cars on dealer lots have them. Second, the M60 falls to 278 miles on 19s and 232 on 20s, which is the real cost of the performance version. Wheel choice moves the number more than most buyers realise.
Performance is the least useful tiebreaker
Both cars are quick enough that acceleration should not decide the purchase. The Model 3 Premium RWD does 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, and the i4 eDrive40 takes about 5.3 to 5.5 seconds depending on whose test you read. In traffic that difference is invisible.
Where they genuinely differ is in how they deliver it. BMW has kept the rear-drive balance and steering feel that its saloons are known for, and the i4 rewards a good road in a way the Tesla does not try to. The Model 3 is faster in a straight line for the money and calmer to drive quickly, which suits a lot of people better.
Charging: a network against a charging curve
The i4 draws on an 83.9 kWh battery and accepts up to 200 kW on DC, which BMW says adds up to 90 miles in ten minutes in ideal conditions. Those are strong numbers, and on a good charger the i4 is not the one holding you up.
Tesla’s advantage is not peak power, it is that the Supercharger network is planned, monitored and routed to automatically. On a long trip that reliability is worth more than a headline kilowatt figure, and it remains the single strongest argument for the Tesla even as other networks improve.
Inside: one screen, or a cockpit
This is the split that decides it for most people who sit in both. The Model 3 puts nearly every function on a central touchscreen, with almost no physical controls, and it either feels clean or feels like homework depending on your tolerance for menus.
The i4 keeps iDrive, a rotary controller, real buttons for climate, and materials that simply feel more expensive. If you have driven a modern BMW saloon it will be familiar within thirty seconds. That familiarity is a large part of what the price gap buys.
Practicality splits the same way. The i4’s hatchback tailgate swallows awkward loads that the Model 3’s saloon boot lid will not, which matters more than any spec sheet if you carry bikes, dogs or flat-pack furniture. The Tesla answers with a deep front boot and a lower load lip at the rear, and with rear seats that fold flat more usefully. Sit four adults in both before you decide, because the numbers on paper hide how differently the two rear cabins feel.
Software, assistance and the optional extras
Tesla continues to push over-the-air updates that change how the car behaves after purchase, and sells Autopilot features and Full Self-Driving capability as paid upgrades whose scope and availability vary considerably by market and by regulatory approval. Treat any claim about hands-off driving as market-specific and check what is actually legal and enabled where you live.
BMW’s driver assistance is more conventional: adaptive cruise, lane keeping and parking aids that work well and promise nothing beyond that. If you want the car you bought to stay the car you bought, this is the more comfortable position.
Which one we would sign for
If the money is the constraint, the Model 3 Premium RWD is the more rational purchase by a wide margin, and our longer-term Model 3 report after six months of ownership covers what living with it is actually like. If you have driven German saloons for twenty years and the cabin is what you will notice every morning, the i4 eDrive40 is worth its premium and you will not regret it. What we would avoid is the middle path: stretching to the M60 for acceleration you will use twice a year, and losing 85 miles of range for it.
Which holds its value better?
Both depreciate, and neither has a spotless record. BMW’s used pricing has historically been steadier across its saloon range, while Tesla values have moved sharply with new-car price changes. Check current local residuals rather than trusting any general rule.
Is the i4 available as an estate or SUV?
The i4 is a Gran Coupe only. If you need a bigger boot in the same family, BMW’s electric SUVs are the answer rather than a longer i4.
Do the EPA figures translate to European ranges?
No. WLTP numbers are measured differently and usually read higher than EPA figures for the same car, so compare like with like before drawing conclusions.
What about servicing costs?
Electric drivetrains need less routine work than combustion ones, but tyres, brake fluid and cabin filters still apply, and both brands price parts at premium level. Get a written service schedule from the dealer before you sign anything.
