Marine engines rarely die of old age. They die of overheating, of salt left to sit, of fuel that spent nine months going stale in the tank, and of small jobs postponed until they turned into large ones. Work out which of those four is coming for your engine, and the maintenance schedule more or less writes itself.

Failure one: overheating, and the part that causes most of it
An overheating marine engine can go from a warning buzzer to a seized powerhead faster than most owners expect, because the cooling water it depends on is the same water it is floating in and any blockage stops the flow entirely.
The usual culprit is the raw water pump impeller, a small rubber-vaned wheel that pushes cooling water through the engine. It wears, it takes a set if the boat sits unused, and vanes eventually break off and lodge somewhere downstream. BoatUS and West Marine both suggest replacing it annually where the boat runs in salt water, and every two to three seasons in fresh water, with an inspection during winterisation or roughly every 200 running hours. Your engine manufacturer’s manual overrides all of that, and manufacturers do differ.
The daily version of this check is simpler. Before you leave the dock, start the engine and confirm the telltale is producing a steady stream rather than a dribble. A weak or intermittent stream means stop and investigate, not carry on and hope.
Cooling checks worth building into the routine

Failure two: corrosion, which starts the moment you come back in
Salt does not need long to start work, and the damage it does is cumulative and invisible until something seizes. Flushing the engine with fresh water after every saltwater outing is the highest-value habit on this whole page relative to the effort involved.
Use the flush port or a set of muffs on the lower unit, run the engine long enough for fresh water to circulate properly, and rinse the powerhead exterior, the trim rams and the transom bracket as well. Salt crystallises in exactly the places you cannot see.
Sacrificial anodes deserve a look at the same time. They are designed to corrode so that your gearcase, trim tabs and shaft do not, which means an anode that still looks new after a season is either the wrong alloy for the water you are in or is not electrically connected properly. Replace them when they are around half consumed rather than waiting for them to disappear.
Failure three: fuel that has been sitting
Marine engines suffer from stale fuel more than cars do, simply because boats spend more of the year not moving. Petrol containing ethanol can absorb moisture and, in a partly filled tank in a humid marina, separate into layers that no engine will run on cleanly.
Three habits cover most of it. Add a fuel stabiliser before any lay-up longer than a month and run the engine afterwards so treated fuel reaches the whole system rather than sitting in the tank. Replace the fuel filter and water separator element on schedule and check the separator bowl for water regularly, because water in the bowl is a warning you can act on. And inspect the fuel lines and primer bulb for hardening, cracking or weeping at the fittings.
Fuel line replacement and anything involving a fuel leak is where the DIY line sits for us. A weeping fuel connection in an enclosed engine bay is a fire risk, not an inconvenience, and it is worth a marine mechanic’s time.
Failure four: the small jobs that get postponed
The last category is not really mechanical. It is the oil change put off until next month, the spark plugs left in for a fourth season, the gearcase oil never checked for the milky colour that means water is getting past a seal.
Engine oil
Change the oil and filter at least annually or at the hours interval in the manual, whichever comes first, and do it at the end of the season rather than the start. Used oil carries acids and moisture, and leaving it in the sump over a long lay-up gives those months to work on the bearings. Warm the engine first so the old oil drains properly, and refill with the marine-grade oil the manufacturer specifies rather than the closest car oil on the shelf.
Gearcase or lower unit oil
Drain a little and look at it. Clean oil is a good sign, milky or grey oil means water ingress and a seal that needs replacing before the gears do. Metal particles on the drain plug magnet beyond a fine grey paste are worth a professional opinion.
Ignition and electrics
Spark plugs, battery terminals and connector corrosion account for a large share of the engines that simply refuse to start on the first warm weekend. Keep terminals clean and greased, keep the battery charged over winter, and replace plugs at the manufacturer’s interval rather than when they finally misfire.

Where the professional line sits
Plenty of this is genuinely owner-level work, and there is real satisfaction in doing it. But some of it is not, and knowing which is which is part of owning a boat responsibly.
Send to a qualified marine mechanic: internal engine work, fuel system repairs and leaks, electrical faults you cannot trace in one sitting, steering and control cables, and anything on which a diagnosis depends on equipment you do not have. A yard can also spot the corroded bracket or the chafing hose that you stop seeing after the tenth time you have looked at it.
Separately, and this is not an engine matter but it belongs in the same pre-season check: confirm your required safety equipment is present, in date and accessible. Lifejackets for everyone aboard and a serviceable fire extinguisher are standard requirements in most jurisdictions, but the exact list depends on your country, your waters and the size of your vessel. Check what applies where you sail rather than assuming.
